Open Studio : Design Sustainable

Sustainable Development

This class we discuss about sustainable development from different aspects :
As general we talked about : social , economic , environment . each one have his / her views how to develop the sustainability and useful for the future .
        1.       Materials : renewable and local building materials , we can use timber construction and timber products , I suggest to use GRC-glass fiber reinforced cement for the wall , of cause we should consider the LCA - life cycle assessment from all the design period .
        2.       Construction waste : some countries have improve the recycling rate to 90% , in order to reduce the waste and CO2 , so from the choose of materials , we should avoid the Non-recyclable material and choose the materials that can be re-used or safely disposed .
        3.       Thailand have large freshwater resource , but everyone still need to saving water , use natural water cycle to reduce the house temperature instead of air condition , use the rain water recycling to reducing water use . also the sustainable urban drainage theory should be used in wastewater Treatment Plant .
        4.       Solar orientation is the most significant resources in Thailand , form the technology view , I suggest to use photovoltaic curtain wall to support the power for the CO2 neutral house , the light changed to be LED .
        5.   The house to be build as a living demonstration , people can come to visit to learn something about Thai cultural and the visitor can build their house like this style ; the house can be use one or two rooms for youth hostel , when the host go out to visit , she also can go to that kind of room for free ; when others know it , the news will spread out as a viral marketing in the social .
Classmates give many methods ,  there are many ways to propagate , booklet , app , social media , youlike , mobile exhibition , link to website as members and posting related work , also the house can be learning center , for visit and station and so on .
I think there are many ways to design / material / build / use / propagation / waste / re-use to catch the aim of " GREEN" .

Mental workload

Mental workload

Mental workload : the demands in the relation to the amount of resources the operator is willing or able to allocate .
Integration of 2 models :
  • Mental (information processing or computational effort - task
  • Body ( physiological energetical resources - state )

High mental workload job include : air traffic control / nuclear power plant operator / pilot / military command & control / anesthesiologist
Factor affecting workload : driver state affecting factor / environmental factor / driver trait factors
  1. Underload : sufficiently frequent , but simple narrow requirements
  2. Overload : time pressure , mental requirements are too frequent

Low arousal have low performance , moderate arousal have high performance , over arousal have low performance .
Manage the mental workload : reduce scope of work / increase scope of work , so you can reduction of task / make the task easier / job rotation or job enlargement / job enrichment or group work .
           Assessment of mental workload
1.   Subjective measurement
  • RSME : rating scare mental effort ( self-report )
  • SWAT : subjective workload assessment technique
  • NASA-TLX rating scale
  • Cooper Harper scale
2. Performance measures
  • Primary-task measures
  • Secondary-task measures
  • Reference task

3. Physiological measures
  • Central nervous system ( CNS ) measures and peripheral nervous system measures
  • Cardiac functions

  1. Task—attention responsibility
  2. Work organization—deadline variation of task
  3. Social relation—feedback status
  4. Working environment—noise room climate

How to measure the mental workload assessment ?

  1. Physiological measures : heart rate / eye fixation

     2.  Performance measures  : primary-task measures / second-task measures
Analytic models for mental workload study :
  • Time-line analysis
  • Segment analysis

Crossed wire (Lose situation awareness)

Three primary factors : distraction / time pressure / breaking habit patterns
Unacceptable use of mobile phones when doing critical tasks , interruptions from people that really don`t need to be talking to you at the time ; Distractions from family , all of the sudden you are going to pick up the stress of you worrying about what`s going on at home and even less likely to focus on the job
We have outcomes that have to be delivered in a set time and time pressure is a prevalent part , but most of people don`t care and realizing his wrong .
You have to be instilling the right habit patterns from your people from the moment they walk into an organization .
Where you`ve just got to deliver output , you should consider is the A-team , the go-to someone-you go straight to them , they get the job done .
Early thing be slightly out of point and somebody has missed that or has decided to ignore that very early on , and as a result of them doing that , then the second incident will happen , which is then compounded , and then a third incident will happen and slowly it`s the sequence of all of these worsening incidents that finally causes something that can be extremely serious or fatal  .
Maintainers :
    1.  Shifwork ( circadian desynchronisation ) : just give some thought on the impact of shift work over the longer term
  • What time of day is it ?
  • How long has it been since you`ve slept ?
  • Have you built up a sleep debt the previous day ?

    2.  Support pattern  : care of when it comes to doing tasks , what you`ve got to be aware of is you won`t realize how your judgement and decision making has been eroded , need good risk controls and basically risk-mitigate skills .
    3.  Avoid potential problems with fatigue and errors that may occur as a result ( cooperation )

Open studio : Sustainable Design

Sustainable Design

This week , we are talking about design form each other`s major , so everyone form his/her aspect to give a deeply expression : whole process / brand / understanding / see / human-mindset / reasonable / efficiency / LED and so on .
My key words is : LCA ( life-cycle assessment )
Life-cycle assessment is a technique to assess environmental impacts associated with all the stages of a product's life from-cradle-to-grave (ie, from raw material extraction through materials processing, manufacture, distribution, use, repair and maintenance, and disposal or recycling) LCAs can help avoid a narrow outlook on environmental concerns by:

  •  Compiling an inventory of relevant energy and material inputs and environmental releases;
  • Evaluating the potential impacts associated with identified inputs and releases;
  •  Interpreting the results to help make a more informed decision .

                                                                                                       come from wikipedia
include : design for procurement / design for manufacture / design for assembly / design for service+maintain+repair / design for disassembly / design for recovering & recycling .
After that , Doctor show us her works and tasks :
The PPT is solar decathlon europe - KMUTT team , it`s about adaptive house in Baan Chaan , like the terrace house , the biggest problem is flooding disaster , and the house should have peaceful atmosphere and waterfront patio , so they use Container as the room size , I think it`s a great choice .
Thailand is too hot , in order to save electric for air condition , should deal well the problem - thermal insulation (Cotton insulation),modular system convenient expansion and mobility .
For the flood , in my opinion , the first idea : the earth dug form pond to elevate foundations ; the second idea : use hydraulic systems to elevate foundations ; the third idea : Foundations similar to the bottom of boat .

Bangkok Mass Transit System -- BTS

Bangkok Mass Transit System -- BTS

Qiao Chongyang   ID : 57120700007

This week we are go to Bangkok Mass Transit System Public Company Limited to take part in the field trip
BTS Sky Trains is used in many cities in the globe , as a second transport only to MRT , BTS with a capacity between 15000 and 30000 passengers per hour , greatly eased the pressure on urban transport .
BTS have four characteristic :
  1. train run using an automated signaling system
  2. train use dedicated tracks and station
  3. train running top speed of 200 kilometers per hour
  4. the largest grouping is four groups

Each train use an electric motor on two elevated rail in the operate direction , according to collision prevention system and speed control system , BTS have a highly secure even in the event of system interruption , because of the automatic adjustment .
Bangkok BTS provide 4-car train-sets with SIEMENS Model , two motored cars with driving cabs at each end of the 4-car configuration , with two intermediate trailer cars supply auxiliary power for air conditioning systems and passenger saloon lighting .
Siemens supply 4 individual systems :
  1. VICOS LIO ( Operational control and traffic control systems )
  2. Smartinfo ( Passenger Information System )
  3. Warning signals traveling state technology systems ( different system )
  4. Communications Equipment
My question :
  • how to use VICOS LIO to adjust the timetable deviate for the many trains , especially in Saphan Taksin station ?
  • if the Smartinfo occur malfunction ,how to solve the problem of  loss connection with control room ?
  • how to use IMU 100 send order to turnout to select direction of travel ?
  • with the development of BTS lines , face too much ORBAS , how to avoid human mistake ?
  • I can`t understand the CTS/M : If the signal in front of the train is positioned "performing" state , with the overlapping of the electric field , the field coil will be zero .
  • Because of changing travel conditions and risk factors , how to use FAHRSI95 - the fault output unit to analysis and control ?
  • With so much information , can we use interactive system to IBIS ? because IMU 100 and CTS/M (ATP) are connected to IBIS .
  • In order to avoid conflicts, how to convert traffic signal priority ?
The BTS in Bangkok supply 750 DC for the traction system , though converters transfer to AC electrical power to the traction motors as propulsion , I heard the Straddle Monorail have much more advantages , so maybe it can be used in the future .
  • I don`t know what`s CNR Model
The future of BTS :
  1. Lightweight ( double skin large extrusion or FRP )
  2. Quiet ( Deadening / Low noise mechanical parts / Rubber-cushioned steel wheel )
  3. Affinity ( C-type right of way )
  4. Modular ( Random combinations )
  5. Flexible ( Articulation )
  6. Customized ( Lyon company )
  7. Standardization ( Critical systems )
  8. Globalization
This week , I take my attention on Technology . but next week , I will focus on Mental workload .
